医師のヨハン・ヴァイアーは、魔女信仰とそれに関連した魔女迫害を克服しようとしました。彼は、悪夢は体の状態の結果であって、悪魔の仕業ではないことを証明しました。彼は迷信的観念の成立に対して、女性の空想や、ヒステリーへの傾向の持つ役割を認識していいました。彼の信奉者は少なく敵は多かった。魔女と見なされた女性たちで、聖職者や、異端糾問官や、狂信的な群衆に迫害され、火あぶりにされるものは、１８世紀まで後を絶たちませんでした。

Johann Weyer, aka Wierus, Wier (1515―1588) was a German physician, occultist and demonologist, disciple and follower of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa.
