ベラドンナ

ベラドンナ、Atoropa belladonna

強い毒性をもつためセイヨウハシリドコロともいう、ナス科の有毒植物。
二年草または一年草で、大きな葉と鐘形の花がつく。

葉と根にふくまれるアルカロイド成分の一つのアトロピンは、眼科の検査のときに瞳孔を拡大させたり、ぜんそくの治療で痙攣をとめたりするのにつかわれる。
かつてイタリアの女性たちが、瞳を大きく美しくみせるためにベラドンナの抽出物をつかったため、イタリア語で「美しい女性（bella“美しい”donna“婦人”）」という名でよばれるようになったという。
