魔女の大集会の意味。
ユダヤのサバース（安息日）に由来する。
キリスト教による、ユダヤ教への差別語として使用されているうちに、異教の（特に、ギリシャのデュオニソスやパーンの）豊穣の儀式と混同され、魔女の集会という意味に変貌してしまった。
