アウグストゥスの姉オクタウィアとマルクス・アントニウスの娘の息子。
妻はアウグストゥスの孫の大アグリッピーナ。ローマ帝国皇帝カリグラの父。

2代皇帝ティベリウスの養子となり、将来の皇帝と目されており、ローマ市民から絶大な人気があったが、紀元後19年に急な高熱により死亡する。この30才を超えたばかりの早すぎる死が、皇帝ティベリウスやシリア総督ピソによる毒殺の噂を呼び、ピソは裁判の被告となったのち、自死することとなる。現在ではその死因はマラリアであったとされている。

Germanicus' parents were Nero Claudius Drusus, son of Livia Drusilla, wife of Caesar Augustus, and Antonia Major, daughter of Marc Antony. Claudius was his brother.
